Social Emotional Learning Programs
Posted by Victoria Saldana on 11/22/2024In the Norfolk Public Schools we believe that students social/emotional development is a critical component of their educational experience. Research consistently demonstrates that safe, caring classroom communities are essential for promoting strong academic achievement and supporting students’ development of 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
We use the Second Step and Open Circle programs to teach students strategies for managing emotions, developing healthy relationships and solving social problems productively. Students learn to respect people’s individual differences and to work collaboratively as a learning community. Students also learn about bullying prevention, effective conflict resolution and digital citizenship through our SEL programs.
Below, you will find links to information about our Social Emotional Programs (SEL) - Second Step (3-6) and Open Circle (K-2).

Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. Please click on the Title above to access the full report for both schools.

-
How is MTSS and NEST process supporting my child? MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. It is not a program but a “way of doing things” so that every child receives “what they need” in order to reach their goals. MTSS is a systematic approach that addresses conditions for creating a successful and sustainable learning environment that is proactive in addressing students’ learning needs. MTSS is based on a 3 tier system.
-
Special Education is specially designed instruction or a related service (like speech, OT, PT) to meet the unique needs of a child who has been identified with a disability which impacts their ability to make progress in school.
